Parway project took the chance over those two days to visit the villages of Las Palmeras and Yanamono in the district of Indiana (Peruvian Amazon).

This was the opportunity to meet and discuss with the teachers, students, children and the medical doctor. The objective of the visit was to better understand the needs of the local population to support education.

One of the major issue for the students who will finished the college in December this year is the difficulty to pursue their studies in Iquitos for financial reasons. The costs of living are too high for them there and scholarship are difficult to obtain. They are kind of trapped in the jungle.

From a general standpoint, the doctor reported nutrition issues as lot of children are underweight for their age; he confirmed the absence, in general, of dental hygiene leading to early carries for children. This phenomena is rather new and due to two factors: sweets are available is the jungle now on one side and on the other side, they’ve stopped using their ancestral dental prophylaxis based on plants (this has not been replaced by the toothbrush).

Parway took the chance to visit the marvelous Library located in between the villages of Yanamono and Las Palmeras. It provides 100 children and teenagers with activities and classes to learn music, arts and much more. The library is a private initiative, mainly supported by Conapac NGO and perfectly managed by Fernando Saavedra.

Many thanks to Fernando for having organized the visit!
